Nyanza Farms Limited
Nyanza Farms Limited (NFL) is an initiative of Nyanza Economic Forum. NFL offers smallholder farm families and investors the opportunity to participate in the emerging agricultural sector in Kenya’s Nyanza province. NFL applies the principles of modern agriculture and agribusiness management to the production of a diverse range of high value crops.

Vision
A vibrant and diversified agricultural economy that generates sustainable livelihoods while protecting the environment.

Mission
To leverage the agricultural production potential of smallholder farm families through agribusiness that promotes sustainable rural development and improves livelihoods.

NFL’s Approach
Currently NFL works with about 10,000 farm households. Through its extension network, NFL provides expert services and advice to farmers on seed quality, soil fertility management, crop protection, and water management.

Agriclinics- Agriclinics are envisaged to provide expert services and advice to farmers on cropping practices, technology dissemination, and crop protection to enhance productivity of crops and animals. Through its Agriclinic networks, NFL undertakes testing and analysis of soil, irrigation water, and other inputs for the benefit of the rural farmers.

Agribusiness Value Chains-NFL applies a business approach to stimulate profitability and competitiveness in agribusiness value chains to improve economic performance of rural communities by alleviating constraints related to investment, production efficiency, value-addition, product branding and product promotion. To propel production, NFL strengthens commercial relationships among motivated smallholder producers, processing intermediaries, wholesalers and retailers including the agro-dealers.

Building Market and Credit Linkages- NFL will strengthen linkages to financial services, post-harvest technology, value addition and marketing of produce to stimulate growth and profitability of smallholder agricultural systems. NFL will identify and sustain lucrative and dependable local, national, regional and international markets.

Growth and Profitability Trends

  • NFL is positioned to realize aggressive growth and profitability targets over the next 10 years and beyond;
  • Potential income will steadily grow to more than Kshs 60 billion (see chart);
  • Production levels will be determined by the conversion of smallholder farmers to produce on behalf of NFL
  • NFL targets 10 million mango trees and 1000 acres under chilly production

All these will translate into an enviable level of investment into the local economy:

  • Investment in over 200 acres for land for cultivation and construction
  • Targeted spend in excess of Kshs1.2 billion per year
  • Investment in physical infrastructure e.g. laboratories, green houses, cold rooms, research facilities, processing plants, staff quarters, etc costing over Kshs160 million
  • Investment in over 100,000 smallholder farmers and their families
  • Creation of jobs locally - targeted 100 employees

Corporate Social Responsibility
Nyanza Farms Limited through Nyanza Farms Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life in communities where Nyanza Farms Limited has members and facilities. The Foundation will proactively help rural communities prosper and prepare for tomorrow through grassroots giving programs focused on education and youth, health, energy, water and sanitation.

To train the next generation of farmers and agri-business entrepreneurs, Nyanza Farms limited will provide tuition aid to local undergraduate and graduate students studying agronomy, horticulture, diary sciences, and plant breeding.

Why invest in Nyanza?
There’s accessible, affordable skilled and semi-skilled labour. Most of the farmers own their land and were brought up on the land. Hence they are very capable farmers, very tough and full of initiative.

Nyanza has a broad range of agro-ecologies. This provides a diverse range of microclimates which permit cultivating a large diversity of crops all year round. Infrastructure will present some huge challenges. But there is opportunity here, through private-public partnership, to improve and expand road and railway networks as well as modernize airport and harbour facilities in the lake region.

Who is driving NFL
NFL is a product of the Nyanza Economic Forum efforts of turning Nyanza’s economy into a vibrant and rewarding undertaking. Membership integrates professionals of diverse backgrounds, farmers, businesspeople, and individuals interested in investing in agriculture and agribusiness in Nyanza.
